The Workhouse Museum will celebrate the many appearances of Inez Milholland on horseback in parades supporting the women's suffragist movement to gain voting rights. The work of Ms. Milholland and other suffragists led to the eventual passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
As August is Ms. Milholland's birth month, the Workhouse Museum will commemorate her work on August 21 from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. A speaker will open the free event with a brief history of Ms. Milholland's work and the suffragist movement, highlighting the role of peaceful parade marches. Children will be able to participate in a mock parade to learn more about the suffragist movement and the sacrifices made by those seeking the right to vote.
The celebration then continues with a motorcade to Occoquan Regional Park, the site where the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial will be built, to honor the women who were held in the Occoquan Workhouse. Join us as we plant a tree and time capsule to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment and in remembrance of Inez Milholland!
