After completing his BA in printmaking and sculpture from the University of Virginia, where he was a star pupil of Dean Dass, Witt completed his MFA in painting at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He then studied under a Master Calligrapher in Damascus Syria on a Fulbright Scholarship, learning all he could about the area's decorative arts and mastering the medium of gold leaf. These early experiences helped shape Witt's mature art form, as he skillfully layers and melds a wide variety of materials--suspensions of mineral pigments, mica, gold and silver leaf, lapis lazuli, rust, as well as intaglio and inkjet prints. The resulting paintings are powerful, evocative and archetypal.
