The premiere of Ozone, a major new work for the entire Company is set to original music by renowned American composer Larry Alan Smith, for cello, flute and voice, and inspired by Rita Dove’s poem by the same name. Ms. Dove, a Pulitzer Prize winning former poet laureate of the United States is the youngest person and first African-American to receive this highest official honor in American letters. Ms. Dove will perform her work on stage with the dancers in McCauley’s thoughtful and moving homage to the risks of global warming.
For a second premiere, McCauley will unveil a new solo Apostasis for Mark Giragosian, her former Maryland Youth Ballet student and now Joffrey Ballet member. Michael White’s glorious piano music is a perfect medium for McCauley’s signature style, which showcases Mr. Giragosian’s grace, charisma, and athleticism.
Reprisals of three of BMD’s most popular works, all choreographed in collaboration with composers, will complete the program. Time and Clouds, a mesmerizing tour de force for an incisive trio, to avant-garde music by Viennese composer Wolfgang Seierl was commissioned by the prestigious Wintergreen Music Festival in July, 2010. Haiku Suite, to music for Japanese shakuhachi flute, drum, and orchestra by Maestro Kim Allen Kluge of the Alexandria Symphony was commissioned by and premiered with the Symphony in March, 2010. McCauley’s stunning choreography alludes to nature and natural phenomenon in this audience favorite.
The evening will conclude with Telemetry, performed live by the seven-member rock band TONE. This hard pulsing, electrifying, large ensemble work takes audiences on a wild ride, punctuated with allusions to some of the seedier sides of life, but also includes the tenderness of love and moments of elation that make life worth living. Guest artist Elisa Clark, now with the Mark Morris Dance Group will reprise her original starring role.
A festive post- performance party will take place following the program to raise funds to support the work of the award-winning dance company.
