Elisabeth Flynn-Chapman brings us a documentary of her 2010, wintry two-month stay in Europe where she carried her camera in one hand and her cane in the other. These are not the usual travel pictures one expects but rather moments captured in Paris, Germany, London and Russia of architecture, interiors and residents from a geometrical and composition centric point of view.
The opening reception is September 24, 2010 from 7 pm - 10 p.m. with live music and is free and open to the public. Shows continue through October 17, 2010 Tuesday-Sunday 12 pm-6pm.
A PHOTOGRAPHIC PILGRIMAGE: Travels with My Camera and Cane
by Elisabeth Flynn-Chapman
Elisabeth Flynn-Chapman spent January and February of this year in Europe based at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Her studio and apartment overlooked the Seine and from her window she could see the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. From this viewpoint she captured the Seine at night, only one of the 40 photographs in the exhibit at Art Works. During her stay she took trips to Germany, Russia and London, traveling alone. And she found people to be “very nice to an old lady with a cane”.
Elisabeth is Professor Emerita of Art and Architectural History has spent her life in museums, teaching and looking at masters’ works and great art. Her first visit to a museum was when her mother took her at 2 years of age. While in High School, she spent every Saturday at the Art Institute of Chicago. When asked where she learned her techniques, she quotes Edward G. Robinson who said, “I learn by looking”.
Elisabeth relies on composition and a trained eye when photographing. While Elisabeth has produced amazing photographic collages, the images in this exhibit are head on shots of whatever caught her eye including interior shots of Notre Dame, stain glassed windows, people, steel and raindrops.
When asked what the high point of her trip was, she says “each day was great, each day was different. I went wherever I wanted, whenever I felt like it.”
The main theme of A PHOTOGRPAHIC PILGRIMAGE is composition and seeing the old and new world around you in a general kind of way by seeing the details. Elisabeth maintains a studio at Art Works and also a working studio at Plant Zero. She gives credit to Chet Naylor, who without his help with framing and many other tasks, the exhibition would not be possible.
