As the name implies, 1762—a rich, ruby port wine produced by Philip Carter Winery—has its provenance in a time more than 250 years ago, during the last years of the Colony of Virginia. The drink commemorates the year the London Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce awarded Charles Carter—one of the first Virginians to promote vineyard cultivation in the colonies and an ancestor of owner and founder Philip Carter Strother—a Premium Gold Medal for his winemaking efforts in the New World. Full-bodied with the taste of sweet fruits, 1762 was first released in 2013 after two years of aging in bourbon barrels from Virginia’s own A. Bowman Smith Distillery.
