Werowocomoco was the principal residence of Powhatan, paramount chief of 30-some Indian tribes in Virginia’s coastal region at the time English colonists arrived in 1607, and was an important Virginia Indian political, spiritual and social center predating the Powhatan chiefdom. Located on the York River in Gloucester County, Werowocomoco is the place where Captain John Smith was taken prisoner by Powhatan in 1607 and first met Powhatan’s daughter Pocahontas.
