This stunning chanteuse has seduced audiences around the world with her hauntingly beautiful voice, luminous stage presence, and soul-stirring interpretations of fado, the traditional Portuguese music genre. This powerful Portuguese-Mozambican contralto is today's face of contemporary fado, and she is introducing this passionate and melancholic music to the world. Known as the poetry of the Portuguese, fado dates back to the 1820s and possibly earlier. It originated in the streets and tavernas of working-class Lisbon, and is a fusion of Gypsy, Arabic, Afro-Brazilian, and Andalucían musical influences. We are pleased to welcome back this gifted vocalist who thrilled our audiences with her last appearance. "[Mariza is] remaking fado’s ancient sadness into a majestic modern sound." (Rolling Stone)
