Les Yeux du Monde and Second Street Gallery present
Susan Bacik: Constructed Meditations, Works 1990-2015
6 – 28 March at Second Street Gallery
13 March – 26 April at Les Yeux du Monde
Les Yeux du Monde Gallery and Second Street Gallery are pleased to announce a collaboration to present the two-venue exhibition, Susan Bacik: Constructed Meditations, Works 1990-2015. This 25-year survey will open on Friday, March 6 with a reception at Second Street Gallery, and run through March 28. The other portion of the show will open at Les Yeux du Monde Gallery on Friday, March 13 with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 and run through April 26.
Susan Bacik is "a master of the art of assemblage", writes art historian and scholar Marjorie Balge Crozier. These shows will present Bacik's mosaics, assemblages and installations from the past 25 years, which highlight her continuing exploration of the role of memory, mystery and transformation in our lives. Mosaics from Bacik's Camouflage series will be shown in Second Street's Dove Gallery, and found object sculpture from her Scales, Oracles and Smoke Poem series will be in the Main Gallery at Second Street, as well as at Les Yeux du Monde.
Throughout the work, one can trace influences from the Catholic iconography of Bacik's childhood, to her exploration of Buddhist concepts of Impermanence, Emptiness, and Karma, as well as emerging parallels between scientific and spiritual understanding. Other works reflect Bacik's early involvement in Quaker activism and her years living in London during the first Gulf War.
There will be special events at both venues throughout the shows' runs. These will include free performances of a new dance based on Bacik's art and entitled, "Moving Meditations," created by choreographer/dancer Katharine Birdsall. She and two other dancers will perform it at Second Street Gallery on three Thursdays at noon: March 12, 19 and 26. At Les Yeux du Monde there will be a guided meditation as part of the "Lunch with the Artist" event on Wednesday, April 8 at noon (reservations required, $15, free for Collectors Club members).
The shows will be accompanied by an exhibition catalog.
