Fauquier Hospital will host a Conversation in Ethics for the community, from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. on October 26, in the Sycamore Room. The subject of the panel discussion will be “The Physician's Order for Scope of Treatment (POST): Making Your Wishes Known.”
The POST document is a form containing orders by a physician who has personally examined a patient and has had a discussion regarding that patient’s treatment preferences for end-of-life care. The form provides physician orders regarding code status; level of intervention (comfort care, limited or full treatment); use or withholding of antibiotics, and use or withholding artificial hydration and nutrition. The purpose of this form is to provide better identification and respect of patient’s preferences for treatment at life’s end.
Dr. Elizabeth Martin, pathologist, will address the ethical issues involved with the use of the POST form. Dr. Matt Kestenbaum, an internal medicine specialist with a specialty in hospice and palliative care, will discuss the details of using the POST form. Amy Gillespie, RN, director of Education Institution for Hospice of the Piedmont, will address the Five Wishes, an advanced directive document.
Attendees are asked to RSVP to Kim Vest at 540-316-4730 or email@example.com. Pizza will be provided for lunch.
