ArtCafé26 presents Anne Fleury, an accomplished abstract contemporary artist from Toulouse, France, at an opening dinner-reception at 5 p.m., on Sunday, September 22.
The event coincides with the New Town Arts Festival, Sept. 22-28, though the Fleury exhibition will hang until Oct. 26 at ArtCafé26, 5107-2 Center Street, NewTown, Williamsburg.
ArtCafé26 enjoys a rich reputation of introducing international artists to Virginia thanks to owner and gallerist Sibilla Deng. This is Fleury’s first solo exhibition in the United States. The artist will answer questions and talk about her work via SKYPE during the opening reception.
Fleury holds a degree from the École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. She has earned solo exhibitions in Paris, London, Toulouse, Barcelona and Tournay, Belgium. Her work has been selected to be part of group exhibitions in Paris, Toulouse, Bordeaux, and Nantes, France, as well as New York City. Her work also belongs in several prestigious private collections.
Fleury has experimented with many artistic materials, including resin, but canvas and paper are her preferred media. Her mixed-media works reflect the influences of someone who has worked also as an art journalist, novelist and currently is participating in several video projects. The paintings provide layers of discovery—a snippet of text, a corner of a photograph, a word swirled discretely into the paint. With each composition, she seems to be asking questions about something as every day as the weather, to deeper questions about the power of life, or the imprint left by each step we take. She says, “Abstraction is a field open to all possibilities. No recognizable image distracts from the larger question of the void.” Today, her work navigates between heaven and earth. “I walk with my brushes, because painting releases me and makes me free.”
