PATHS TO THE SUN AND MOONMaximo Laura“Tapestry-making requires a progressive, slow and irreversible system of work that allows for the miniscule, patient and intimate meeting of technical and visual solutions…” With this approach, Maximo Laura has presented 68 solo shows in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, United States, Spain, France, Finland, Latvia, Germany, China, and Japan. This exhibit, in the Jane Sandelin Gallery will be a premier event in Virginia.
GLEANING FOR COLLAGE FROM THE GUTTER TO THE GARDENEmma Lou MartinAn award winning and versatile artist, Ms. Martin is an award winning and versatile artist and as founding director of Uptown Gallery is devoted to enriching Richmond’s art community. Her new work embodies the essence of mixed media and found objects organized into collage. The exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery East.
WAX ON … WAX OFFJane PorterJane Porter’s award winning paintings will be on exhibit in the Centre Gallery, West. Some of the paintings are encaustic. Encaustic painting is also know as hot wax painting and involves using heated beeswax and color pigments on prepared wood or canvas. Other materials are often used. The technique was used in Fayum mummy portraits in Egypt around 100-300 AD. Jane will share with us a live bee hive (in glass) on opening night.
JOHN PRICE RECENT WORKSPrice paints and draws realistic portrait originals including commissions, celebrities, civil war heroes, and self portraits. His work is exhibited in Richmond’s Civil War museums. The exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery.
ELDERS: CREATIVE SPIRIT This is the second annual exhibit of elders’ artwork organized by Audrey Skeen. The exhibits features paintings, artwork, crafts, poems and food/recipes created by senior artists at Circle Center, Senior Connections, Elder Friends and Beth Shalom. Senior programs of VCU and University of Richmond will be participating also. The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. The elders are sharing some of their life stories and the facilities are providing information about their programs. Maximo Laura, Peru’s foremost weaver and preserver of ancient weaving techniques and tapestry art forms, returns to Art Works with an array of colorful and intricate work for the FOURTH FRIDAY JUNE art show and reception. 5 other shows are on display featuring the All Media Show juried by Chris Semtner, encaustics by Jane Porter, collage by Emma Lou Martin, portraits by John Price, and the Elders group show. The exhibits continue through July 17, 2011.
