A BFA college degree in communication arts/graphic design is required. The ideal candidate should already be working in an established freelance capacity, with the knowledge that your time with Virginia Living is a firm 8 hour day, 3-week commitment every 2 months. Our goal with this position is to build a strong, long-term relationship. The Creative Services Assistant should possess a strong knowledge of graphic design, advertising strategy, typography and color. The Creative Services Assistant will work closely with the Creative Services Director during this 3-week period. The assistant is responsible for the efficient production of at least 50% of the ads in the issue. The deadline period consist of duties performed during 2 weeks of pre-production, and 1 week of post-production.
Standard Operating Procedures
- Design, prepare, pre-flight, and traffic ad proofs, camera-ready or designed in-house.
- Using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop to efficiently design a range of ads varying in size from one-sixth page to full-page as needed for each issue.
- Place approved ads onto layout pages. Prepare layout pages for press.
- Attend weekly Creative Services meetings with the publisher.
- During post-production week, attention is focused on preparing materials for the sales staff for the next issue.
Other duties as assigned. Position reports to Creative Services Director. Pay is $15 per hour.
YEARLY SCHEDULE:
6 issues per year — 3 weeks, at or around the middle of every other month (even months):
Hours: 8:30 to 5:30, M-F or more as needed

- Oct. 12 – 23 (includes layout weekend of 17th and 18th), Oct. 26 – 30
- Dec. 14 – 24 (includes layout weekend of 19th and 20th), Dec. 28 – 31
- Feb. 9 – 20 (includes layout weekend of 14th and 21st), Feb. 23 – 27
- Apr. 11 – 22 (includes layout weekend of 16th and 17th), Apr. 25 – 29
