Click is the section in the UpFront section of Virginia Living that covers events around the state. These are party pictures, pure and simple. While the events and charities are of interest and we are glad to give attention to worthy causes, in the end, readers are interested in people. Virginia Living sometimes sends writers out to events to cover them, but most event photos are submitted by nonprofit staffers or volunteers. We are happy to publish photos taken by you, but we ask that they not appear anywhere else. Here is some other information:
What events are covered?
Events must be nonprofit or charitable in nature, whether the event was held for the benefit of a charity or related to it. Thus, the opening of a for-profit store is not an item for CLICK, but an opening of a store that benefits a cancer charity is.
What format?
Please send us digital pictures, 200 to 300 dpi, with size around 2 by 3 inches or larger. Those pictures should be taken close in, not far away. They need to be of faces, not the table or decorations. In addition, the folks in the picture need to be in focus, and all the folks in the picture need to be looking into the camera. Please send them in on a separate CD-ROM, with the name, date and charity written on top. This makes it easy to keep track of them. Preferably, tape your business card to the top, in case we have questions. We do not return photos or CD-ROMs unless accompanied by an SASE, and we cannot bear responsibility for them if they are damaged in the production process. PLEASE send us a copy if you wish to keep an original. We discourage snapshots. Please send no more than 15 photos. Send ATTN: Click, Virginia Living magazine, Cape Fear Publishing, 109 E. Cary St., Richmond, VA 23219. Alternatively, e-mail Editor@CapeFear.com, and please use "CLICK" in the subject line.
Copy Rules
Write a SHORT paragraph listing the basic facts of the event — who, when, where, why, how many attended, how much money was raised. After this short introduction, include a list of all pictures with names written below each digital file name. Photos lacking names or other information have less chance of being included in the magazine.
Who gets covered?
Virginia Living has dozens of requests for CLICK coverage each issue. This means that while we will try to get your event in the magazine, we cannot guarantee it. For instance, if your Cancer Ball was covered last year, we would not give it priority the next year. We also try for a geographic spread that's as wide as possible.
What we can't use
Always, we reserve the right not to use the photos at all if we do not feel that they will reproduce well or are inappropriate. In addition, we won’t use multiple photos of the same person with different groups, or groups that cannot all be identified by name.
Time of publication
It takes months to get an event in the magazine; in most cases, count on getting your event in the magazine at least six months after the date.
Whom to send in photographs of?
With CLICK, we are interested in personalities—the chairman of the event, the honoree, the clever costume, the stunning dress. This is what makes looking at the section fun.
