A view of the University of Virginia's new South Lawn project, now open to students and faculty.

Wine Connoisseur: The R.R. Smith Center for History & Art in downtown Staunton continues with its exhibit of 16th, 17th, and 18th century silver, glass, and maps. Among the private collection of more than 40 original historic maps, the exhibit includes a special tribute to Thomas Jefferson, highlighting his travels through the wine growing regions of France. Virginia Living wrote about the exhibit in the August 2010 issue.

Back to School: Students bearing armloads of laundry supplies, milk storage crates, mini fridges, and cases of Red Bull descend on Virginia’s colleges and universities for the beginning of the fall 2010 semester.

Lawn Extension: On a related note, the University’s of Virginia $102.5 million, 116,000-square-foot South Lawn project - the “most ambitious undertaking on Central Grounds in a century” – opened its doors. The South Lawn complex is located behind New Cabell Hall on Jefferson Park Avenue.

DWTS-HR: Can’t wait until the new season of “Dancing with the Stars”? If you are in the Hampton Roads area, you can get your fix with “Dancing with the Ocean View Stars” on Friday, August 27 at Ocean View Beach Park in Norfolk. The event will feature a constellation of city leaders-turned-hoofers including Norfolk Fire and Rescue Lieutenant Damon Langley, Susie Grampp with Norfolk's Bureau of Community Outreach, and WVEC-TV reporter Joe Flanagan.

Bike Madness: This weekend, grab your two wheels and head to the Nelson County Bike Festival. On Saturday, August 28, take part in the Devils Backbone Mountain Cross, a scenic 65 mile trek through Nelson on paved and dirt road. On Sunday, August 29, the Stampede on Horseshoe Mountain takes you up and across Brent’s Gap and around the mountain, starting and stopping at event host the Devils Backbone Brewery. Registration is required.
