On the Wings of Love - Okay, let’s forget how the last season of “The Bachelor” almost ruined any fond memories of this song forever, and remind ourselves that we’ll get to see Jeffrey Osborne live and in person to sing this romantical hit from the early ‘80’s and others. The “Men of Soul” tour at the Hampton Coliseum on October 8 also includes such velvet-voiced singers as Peabo Bryson (“If You're Ever in My Arms Again”), Freddie Jackson (“You Are My Lady”), and Howard Hewett (“Say Amen”).
Be Afraid – With Halloween fast approaching, the best way to get in the spirit of the season is to get scared silly. If you are visiting Colonial Williamsburg this weekend, sign up for the “Tavern Ghost Walk” or the "Ghosts Among Us” walking tour. The “Cry Witch” program, where by candlelight the audience determines the fate of an alleged witchcraft practitioner, will also probably do the trick. Some tours/programs are more suitable for children than others. Check history.org for more information.
Get Outdoors - What’s The Festy Experience, you ask? It’s a two-day (October 9 and 10) camping, music, and all-around-celebration-of-the-outdoors festival held at The Concert Grounds at Devils Backbone in Nelson County. Al fresco concerts will feature the likes of bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters and a roots-Americana-playing Railroad Earth, as well as Josh Ritter & The Love Canon String Band, Toubab Krewe, The Tony Rice Unit, and other musical acts. Get even more fresh air into your lungs by partaking in the fest’s Blue Ridge Burn 5k and 10k Trail Runs on Saturday and the Devils Backbone Mountain Bike Challenge on Sunday. We hear there will be beer there too.
Farm Day - Head up a little further north to Fauquier County for The Fall Farm Tour and Field Day on October 9. See the bunnies, chickens, cattle and alpacas up close, take a pony or hay ride, see working and demonstration gardens, and buy some locally grown produce, baked goods, or Virginia wine. Included on the tour is Morningside Training Farm, a 125 acre horse and rider training and equine education center. Loads of other things-to-do that celebrate local agriculture are on tap – pumpkin and apple picking, music on the porch, a corn maze, farm equipment displays – and much more.
