Do you like this?

Here in Virginia, there is the well-loved Charlottesville Office Machine Company, just blocks from UVA and in business for over 50 years that specializes in restoration of old typewriters and hard to find parts and ribbons. There are also similar shops located in Harrisonburg, Winchester and Roanoke (see below).

The vintage typewriter has such a rich history and there is much to learn if you want to begin your own collection, so I have provided several fun places to start the process.

Reading Material:

Smithsonian Institution: The Smithsonian gets tons of requests for information on the typewriter. This is the most comprehensive bibliography I found on the evolution of the typewriter. It includes papers and books from around the world on every detail of the typewriter’s history and origins.

  • electric type writer

I would love to find an electric type writer in good condition. My father is ninety since he once was a very successful editor I thought his long term memory would translate well to a machine he used so much in his profession. The computer just doesn't trigger those memories. Could someone please tell me where I could find a decent electric type writer for my Dad?

    Thank you so much....
