But we have had a very good month of arugula harvesting, with the Red Russian kale and mustard greens following closely behind. There have also been some interesting volunteers—the mint, a sunflower and some spinach (I think).
A curious sidenote on arugula: Whenever I planted it in our raised beds, it would end up besieged by some pest that would nibble it to lacey bits. In the smaller, confined space of the cold frame, this didn’t happen. It is the best arugula I have ever grown (“Roquette” from Seeds of Change).
I will return to you, sweet cold frame, in September, as we embark on the second leg of our 2010 journey for a fall and winter harvest. I’m thinking of expanding you a pinch, with more soil and a little more cold frame real estate. You’ve been good to me, and I look forward to many more years of this fantastic relationship in which you do all the work. And I do all the crowing.
