King snakes are known to eat other snakes. Perhaps the king snake bit off more than it could chew when it chanced upon the copperhead.

That was my first thought when we happened on the knot of interwoven snake muscle - a mating ball - but not with drawn fangs. And besides, copperheads & king snakes don’t crossbreed. One’s an egg layer, the other births live snake-lets.
