Do you like this?

The golden beets and carrots above are from the previous week. The carrots were for snacking—I tell you, the carrots I get at farmers’ markets are just so much more carroty. The beets went into this pasta. It was very satisfying to take the “head-to-tail” approach, using both beets and greens.

Here are some of your farmers’ markets, Virginia—get out and support them, and give yourself the gift of beautiful food for as long into the autumn as you can. (And after you wander off on these links, come back here! There’s good stuff, including plenty of recipes to use your farmers’ market loot.)

  • Great Reminder

This is a great reminder that the farmer's markets don't close up shop once the weather turns cool. I'm fortunate enough to live near a year 'round market - and I go regardless of weather. I'm often surprised at the drop-off in crowds in fall and winter. Especially since so much good stuff comes in during the cooler months: winter squash, cabbage, pecans, apples, sweet potatoes -- you name it. Put on a sweater and get out there people!
