The iconic pale blue jewelry box that epitomizes (high-end) romance is coming to Richmond. Tiffany & Co., the renowned jeweler that was founded in 1837 in lower Manhattan as a stationery and fancy goods store, will be opening a new store early this fall at the Stony Point Fashion Park. The Tiffany & Co. Stony Point Fashion Park store will be the 87th Tiffany retail outlet in the United States, and second in Virginia—the other is at Fairfax Square in Vienna, across from Tyson’s Corner Center. Tiffany was the first American company to use the 925/1000 sterling silver standard, in 1851—it was later adopted as the U.S. sterling standard. Fifteen years later, in 1886, the company conceived the idea of lifting the diamond above the band in engagement rings, allowing light to enter the stone, and holding it in place with six platinum prongs. It remains the world’s most popular setting for engagement rings. Gentlemen, find your wallets.
