Are you like me—in that you are kind of overwhelmed some most years by everything you need to get done in the garden before the Virginia heat hits? As in, before the middle of June?

There are lots of plants that you can still start from seed in June. A quick list is below, including cleome (pictured above). This is part of a list that Johnny’s Selected Seeds sent out a few years ago in an early-summer email.

HERBS: basil, borage, calendula, chamomile, chervil, cilantro, dill, flax, marjoram, milk thistle, parsley, poppy and savory.

FLOWERS: calendula, cleome, cosmos, grasses, hyacinth bean, marigold, morning glory, nasturtium, phlox, poppy, scarlet runner bean, sunflowers and zinnia.

VEGETABLES: beans, beets, carrots, corn, cucumber, pumpkins and squash.

As we enter the drier months, you may need to give them a little more TLC and water at the beginning. But the unexpected perk of this lack of planning and late sowing is blossoms and blooms through October. Nobody needs to know they were a result of forgetfulness or being overwhelmed. Instead, you will look as if you planned for an extended season of cutting flowers. Superstar gardener!
