What’s better to set off green, moss and twiggery than a hint of metal in the garden? It can come in the form of a birdbath, a garden marker or a sundial. A glinting bit of folly never hurts the garden-scape. The metal elements attract the eye and tend to be a bit more reminiscent of old, rambling gardens with surprise moments where one can pause and gaze. I grew up visiting one particular estate garden on Long Island, and the first spot I would always run to was the garden’s ancient-looking sundial.

If you are interested in adding a little metal to your garden but on a budget, I make simple galvanized tin planters out of the buckets you can buy at your hardware store (I even found some for $3 at the local Dollar General). Flip over the bucket and with a hammer and sturdy, stout nail, create several drainage holes. The pale purple and pink flowers of early spring look especially appropriate in these buckets. And you can let them sit outside for most seasons – the weather-induced batterings and resulting patina just add to their charm.
