The cloche is the simplest of contraptions created to mimic a greenhouse. It provides warmth and moisture to the more fragile of houseplants and can act as a season extender in the outdoor garden. Here are a few that are on my want-y list, as well as a do-it-yourself tea cup cloche idea for you clever spendthrifts.

Aged Garden Cloche from the Monticello Gift Shop - $125 (top left)

Cloche with Base from English Creek Gardens - $39.95 (top right)

Refurbished Cast Iron Cold Frame from Mothology - $395 (bottom left)

Feeling crafty and up for making something on your own? A cloche can be created for under $20. My tea cup cloche (bottom right) was made on the super-fly, super-cheap. A sweet little tea cup find from a local thrift shop provides the perfect spot for a fern (think dewy, misty—remember, tender ferns are okay with having wet feet). Pot it up with regular potting soil and maybe some organic fertilizer pellets. Candle holders, bowls, hurricane glasses, vases can all be turned upside-down and become—poof!—a cloche. And, because a cloche helps keep things low-maintenance as far as watering goes, the recipient of your gift isn’t tethered to their new plant’s thirst needs.
