Mother Earth News is also impressed with the strong alternative community, which has fostered a lively arts scene and what the magazine calls a "DIY, back-to-the-land ethic." Hippy stuff, basically, but in the best possible way. Because this is a town that seems well prepared for change.
According to the 2000 Census, Floyd has a population of just 432. That number is likely to grow as Floyd receives recognition and attracts newcomers, but movements like the Sustain Floyd organization exist to "preserve and enhance the local community", meaning newcomers are welcome, but Floyd isn't about to lose the flavor that made it so attractive to begin with.
