Do you like this?

"Brothers" by Gary Casteel.

"Brothers", a 900-pound bronze sculpture by Gary Casteel, was installed at the Virginia Capitol in Richmond on Monday. The work depicts an emotional embrace between siblings who had fought for opposing sides in the Civil War.

The above image shows the work during production, but in the final piece both brothers have lain their rifles down by their sides. I'm no art critic and no Civil War historian, but this feels like a powerful symbol of national reunion expressed about as clearly as can be.

The sculpture has been shown elsewhere in Virginia, but arrives at the Capitol just over a week before the sesquicentennial (that's 150th) anniversary of the first Confederate Congress, which took place July 20, 1861.
